There's Nothing Like A Good Story

When was the last time you heard a good story? In an age of instant access to media through books, kindles, magazines, iPods, iPads, Knooks and tablets, you’d think a good story would only be a touch pad away!
But, good stories are still difficult to come by. That’s why Hollywood and the entertainment industry will occasionally delve back into the vault and remake a golden oldie.
It seems like every comic book hero story has been made into a movie. They have all the features of a good story. A bad guy, a hero and an impossible situation that only a superhero could manage. We cheer together as the hero predictably saves the day.
But, Why? Why do we love to hear that same old story over and over again? Well, it’s because we love redemption stories. We love to see good overcome evil. We love to see the underdog become the winner. We love to see those who are down and out go from rags to riches. Let’s face it, we love the whole idea of redemption.
What a lot of people may not know is that the story of redemption is the oldest story and the greatest story every told. It’s the story of the Bible. The Bible tells us about a God who creates the world and it’s inhabitants, chiefly the human race, out of sheer joy and love—as an overflow of his glory. Then, in rebellion to the Creator, the human family falls into sin. This puts God in what seems like a dilemma. But, God knew this would happen and had a plan of redemption in place all along. He would send His Son to redeem the lost human race. He would do this by coming to earth and becoming a man. Then, he would take the just sentence for rebellion and sin that all humanity deserved by dying on a cross. His name was Jesus. The story would have a sad ending if it stopped there. But, three days later, this same Jesus conquered sin, death and the grave when he rose from the dead. Alleluia!
Starting Sunday, January 8th, we are going through The Story of the Bible together at the Amity Church of Christ. Over 31 weeks we will cover the entire Bible. Join us on Sundays and read your own copy of The Story during the week. To learn more, go to www.thestory.com.
